Founded in Amsterdam in 1870 by friends Charles de Pesters and Johannes van Marwijk Kooy, Amstel beer was created as a premium Bavarian-style pilsner, named after the Amstel River that flows through the city, using its water for cooling. It quickly grew, starting exports by 1883, and became a leading global brand after being acquired by Heineken in 1968, known for its balanced taste and global presence in over 100 countries today.
